A friend of the family (my parent's neighbor) who owns her own reupholstering business just reupholstered 6 dining room chairs and my desk chair for me. She did not charge me for either materials or labor. I'd like to give her a gift to say thank you. What would you think would be appropriate. I have no idea what she would have normally charged for this job but I believe the fabric aloneg would have been close to $200.
I would give her a gift Certificate to the Movies and dinner for her and her hubby and make a Gift certificate on my computer for a night of free babysitting, so it covers the night out.

Most likely they did it because they wanted to (how nice!) and she probably expects nothing in return. A nice, written thank you note expressing your thanks and satisfaction is probably more than enough! If you really, really want to get her something, I like the ideas of a charitable contribution in her name, tickets to a movie or show, or gift card to a nice restaurant.
I always like to give things that a person would never get for themselves. Maybe a spa gift certificate? You could also send one of those Edible Arrangements (like a bouquet of flowers but it's made of fruit), those are always a big hit.
Along with all of the wonderful thank you ideas you have already received I would also recommend pouring as much referral business her way as you can along with a thank you note with theatre tickets and/or dinner out to a really fancy restaurant.
What an extravagant gesture? I would be over the moon with gratitude and I only have one dear chair that is in desperate need of redone uphostering.

I always give flowers as a thank you gift. Add a beautiful ribbon, and a personal note. I think flowers are a classy and elegant gift
Gift cards are nice. If your friend is as generous as you say, she probably would appreciate you making a donation in her name to a charity.
Otherwise you could pay her with your time and do something like pull weeds or other lawn care this coming spring.

Well, I recently had 6 dining room chairs redone and the cost came to $200 PER CHAIR, including fabric. So it sounds like you got a great deal -lol ! Perhaps if your parents know her better, they could suggest something appropriate. Maybe she has a hobby and you could give a related gift card? A gift certificate to a restaurant is always nice, as is a personalized gift basket of some sort (gourmet food? spa items?). In our area we have a company called "Cookies by Design" where you can order a "bouquet" of cookies made to order for any occasion. I'm sure whatever you give will be appreciated.
take her for a fancy dinner. something you usually wouldn't splurge on. that way you get to enjoy it so does she and you have an excuse for splurging :) ps take both husbands too
