Anyone Tried Clomid?

Hello ladies! I find myself asking your wonderful opinions again! Short story...I have two wonderful boys, 3 and 17 months. We want one more, but it has now been 6 months of trying and nothing has happend. I had surgery over the summer and they found a small amount of endometriosis. I just went to the doctor at the beginning of the month and he suggested using clomid, that my body wasn't doing the "process" insync.
Has anyone used this? Did you have success conceiving? What were your side affects?
One more question, which is silly but I need to get it out. I don't know if I am over planning or what not, but my first round of clomid should be January. IF it works and I get pregnant, that would put me due around October. My oldest was born in Oct. and the only thing that is going through my head is, what if I do get pregnant and I am due then? I would hate for my oldest boys bday to be over shadowed by a new baby. Whether I have the baby before or after. So should I wait until Feb. to start? Or should I just start and see what happens?
Thanks in advance! You ladies are all wonderful!

I tried getting pregnant for over a year without any success. My doctor put me on one round of Clomid and I got pregnant immediately. I didn't notice any side effects. I'd say start on the Clomid as soon as possible.

Good luck!

I was on Clomid for two months. I did not notice any side effects.

I am one of four siblings. 3 of the four had the same birthday month and my brothers, although two years apart, shared the same birthday. These logistics never seemed to matter. Should the baby arrive close to the same time as your sons birthday, present that as an incredible gift.

I took clomid and the next month I was pregnant! The doctor also did not mention the higher probability of having multiples with this drug, which I'm not sure I would have taken the drug had I known this. One baby at a time is good enough for me.

I had high FSH levels (low egg reserves) and they ran the Clomid Challenge test on me to test those levels. I was ovulating each month. I was on Clomid for 5 days with no side effects. I got pregnant that month! I agree with someone who posted earlier, they should be checking progesterone levels to see if you're ovulating each month first. As far as being due in October, I say, let what will be, be. There are plenty of ways to make your older son still feel very special amidst the birth of the new baby.

Rather than arbitrarily starting clomid, your doctor should do some testing to see if anovulation is even the problem. I took clomid to conceive with 2 of my pregnancies. I had some pretty serious hormonal side effects, lots of crying, and mood swings etc. And the 2nd time I took it, the main side effect was twins :) You should be monitered very closely though, blood work to observ fsh and lh levels, and ultrasounds to determine ovulation, and make sure you don't develop cysts, etc. I conceived in my 3rd month of clomid with my 1st, and the 2nd month of clomid with my last

I can understand your situation...I had no problems getting pregnant with my first 2 children. After a year of trying for #3 we started some testing...no problem with my husband, all of my horomone levels were normal, but I wasn't ovulating. My dr. recommended Clomid, I did 6 cycles on Clomid and didn't ovulate at all. Then my cycles got really irregular (which has never been a problem) and it turns out that I had developed PCOS (my ovaries were covered in cysts and it could have been from Clomid). I had to go on horomonal birth control to regulate my period for a couple of months. After all of that we tried something different...Glucophage and Letrozole. I ovulated the first month and got pregnant in the 3rd cycle. I now have a 2 month old son after trying to get pregnant for almost 3 years.
As far as side effects from Clomid, I did have some and even though it didn't work, it was worth it. I wanted to feel like I had given it a real chance.

When it comes to the birthday issue...My 5 year old son and my 2 month old son are exactly 5 years and 2 days apart! There was a good chance they would have shared a birthday and I was REALLY worried about it, but my older son was actually the one who made me feel better about it. He was actually upset when I told him that I didn't want them to have the same birthday, he thought it would be cool! We will see how it plays out as they get older, but I am optimistic.
Good luck getting #3 here! It's so worth it!

Hi,

I tried Clomid with no success. My dr says that if it doesn't work after 6 months, it is too dangerous for anyone to continue taking it, and they should try different hormonal injections.

I also had side effects. My eyes stopped tracking normally, so that when I turned a corner while driving, I couldn't see until I was going straight again.

I recommend acupuncture to everyone to try and even out your hormones internally, rather than putting synthetic stuff in your system.

However, I know lots of ladies that got pregnant on Chlomid, and it was all with singles, not twins.

Good luck,
Marci

I think family planning is a very personal decision -- and you should never let anyone judge whether you are wrong or right. I did NOT want a November or December baby (my birthday and wedding anniversary and my brother's birthday are all in Dec), so I made sure it didn't happen. In fact, I'm an older Mom and needed fertility assistance for my first...and I halted everything during the critical months. Now I have a Feb baby and a May baby! If you think waiting it is best for you and your family, then go ahead and wait. Best wishes!!

PS I had no side effects from Clomid. I couldn't tell I was on anything -- no changes to my hormones or moods, etc. However, I was seeing a Reproductive Endocrinologist who was monitoring me via blood tests multiple times throughout a cycle. He made sure I was on the exact dose my body needed.

I think you are way over thinking this for sure. Just let it be and if there is any way you can put off starting the drugs, do it. Your body is meant to function in its own, especially when you are carrying a baby. I wouldn't risk messing with it.

As far as over shadowing your son's birthday. I just think that if you make it an issue then he will. If the baby is born close to his b-day, then run out and get a little gift from the baby to him celebrating his birth. All births are an important event and no matter how close they are together, they need to be celebrated.

So go forward and enjoy, it is a wonderful thing we are able to do, don't make it daunting.

Good luck!

I used Clomid. I got pregnant on my second cycle (month 2). As for side effects - your hormones run amok, so I had hot flashes. And, that's all I remember. I had tried to concieve for 6.5 years before this. And my oldest is now 9. The other 2 were "surprises".

As for worrying about birthday and due date - I'd just let it go. I think that if you just relax things will all work out. And if their birthdays are close, that's ok, isn't it? My Dad is an oldest kid - his youngest sibling was born on the exact same day as him but several years later. My husband's birthday is his parent's anniversary. I'm just saying that sharing the day isn't bad.

Good Luck!

Can't say anything about Clomid, but about the birthdays...I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as you keep their days separate and special (i.e. 2 different cakes, even 2 different days to celebrate it if they are really close or on the same day).

Here's our situation...my oldest son was born 2 weeks before my birthday and my youngest son was born 2 weeks after my husband's birthday. My niece who lives in the same town as us was born 2 weeks after my birthday as well and a week before Christmas and her mom/my sister-in-law was born 2 weeks before my husband's birthday, almost exactly 2 years apart. So needless to say, August and Nov/Dec are interesting for the birthday planning...we usually sit down with a calendar in July and then again in early November and say, we are doing so-and-so's birthday on this weekend and so-and-so's birthday on the next weekend and we make it special that way - that person gets to choose the meal and the cake type (it is not usually on the person's birth date, but that has never really bothered any of us and even the little kids don't seem to mind- maybe just keep out 1 present that they can open on their actual day). We also have to plan (and work around things) not only with our sister's family, but also with my husband's parents and his grandmother who come as well because we all live within 30 minutes of each other! Needless to say, it doesn't always work out, but we always make sure at least the kids' days are celebrated correctly!

Case in point, this year I didn't even get to celebrate my birthday on my own day because the only open weekend between my son's and my niece's birthdays and Christmas, we had a church Christmas program I was directing, so my mother-in-law just bought me a small cake and after my niece was done with her cake and opening her presents and had been playing with her new stuff for a little bit, she explained to her that we were going to sing to me too and brought my cake over and then I opened my presents in the background. I didn't mind at all and my niece didn't feel upset at the need to quietly celebrate my birthday on the same day. We are all very flexible and if you don't make a big deal about it, it'll go over fine. I should mention that the kids are 4, 2 and 4 months! Good luck!

I've taken Clomid. My doctor limits it to 4 cycles. But we were fairly confident that I was ovulating, so I just took the lowest dose. There are 3 different doses of clomid & as you go up in dosage, the side-effects and chances for multiples goes up significantly. At the lowest dose, the chance is rather low...the natural chance for twins is 1.5% & on the lowest dose of clomid it only goes up to around 2%. On the highest dose, that goes up to 8%. I only took the lowest dose of clomid & was fortunate because I had no side effects other than a bit of pain when I ovulated. I've known friends that have been driven crazy by the side effects - mostly with mood swings. I would talk to your doctor & make a plan for how many months to try & would use the lowest dose he/she thinks will work. Start low & do an ovulation kit to see if you are ovulating - but make sure it's a kit that the clomid will not interfere with...not all ovulation kits work when you are on clomid.

As for the timing, after having been through infertility issues - I wouldn't put things off just for birthday timing. If it takes you awhile, you just don't want those kind of what-ifs hanging over you. It gives you great peace of mind to know you've tried everything you can. There are ways to make birthdays special & you will find a way. Besides, there are great lessons to be learned in life when we don't try to save our children from things that might be less than ideal!

I was having problems conceiving #3. I took Clomid in Sept and it worked like a charm. I'm expecting and due in June. I found myself to be a little irritable for a few days but that is all. My experience was very posiive and obviously well worth it.

My other 2 kids (4 & 3) share a room and love it. Bunk beds could make you childs room-sharing experience more exciting, if she's old enough of course.

I used clomid to get my first son after trying for over a year. We were able to get pregnant but it ended up in an eptopic pregnancy that required the loss of one of my tubes. After doing a small amount of research I learned that it is possible for clomid to "cause" an eptopic pregnancy. Though we ended up getting pregnant 3 weeks after the removal and all went perfect. So I would say that it works but b4 you start on it do they reseach and weigh out your pros and cons! Good luck!!

Yes, I used clomid, and yes, I had some side effects. Mainly hormonal. I was a mess with crying and over thinking EVERYTHING. I actually didn't realize that it was the clomid until I got switched to something else.

If you do decide to use clomid, make sure that they monitor you VERY carefully and are really invested in you. My doc did an awful job of that. I was told to abstain for the weekend, and on Monday - oh, you ovulated, didn't you have sex over the weekend? Turned out I hadn't even ovulated at all. The other risk is that your body could respond too well to the medicine and you could end up with ALOT of eggs being released. Go in knowing the risks and what you are willing to deal with. Worst case scenario, check out a fertility specialist that knows and understands this process more than a regular doc or ob/gyn. They can do a real check to determine if it is you or your husband. Also know that it may not happen with the first cycle.

As far as birthdays, we had planned for our kids to be about 6 months apart for them, but apparently July/August is a good time for me, and my #2 is due 2 weeks after my first's birthday. I'm not making a big deal out of the closeness and will just make sure that they each get their special day. They won't even know anything different.

I tried for a year with my first daughter. I took chlomid then. It didn't work the first month, I figured it wouldn't but I took it another month and got pregnant. My doc said he doesn't know if it was from the drugs or just "time". I tried with baby #2 and did chlomid for 2 months with no resulting pregnancy. Finally after almost 2 years he came along:).
My doc told me he would't let me use it more than 3 months, because it could have bad effects. It is possible to have multiples on the drug. In short, it tells your body you are not ovulating so it makes you ovulate. If you are ovulating, it means you produce twice as many.
As for the birthday, as long as you make it still a special day for your son, he will be fine. Just make sure he is not forgotten. Our family has 3 Nov. birthdays, (me, hubby, daughter) it is kind of a hard month with Thanksgiving and then christmas the next month. I often get thankgiving dinner as my special birthday dinner! if you make the same amount of fuss over your son's birthday as normal, he won't mind a new baby.

I didn't get pregnant on clomid, but I did have crazy hot flashes on it.

Also, depending on the dosage, it can dry up your cervical mucus, so you might want to chart that and if necessary, use Pre-Seed as a lubricant. GL!

i used clomid to conceive my first. We tried for a year and a half. I also had to take one other thing that allowed me to have a period. My body was not regular. However, I only had to doone month of the actual clomid to concieve. The only side affect was I was a little emotional, but not sure if that was the clomid or just wanting to conceive. One other note it does promote twins so just know that is an option. Also in the long run I don't think your boy would care about the birthday thing. But why not wait just one more month to be safe. Good Luck!

I was in a similar situation. We got pregnant very easily with my first 2 boys and it was taking more than 8 months to get pregnant again. My problem was short lutel phase... my cycle was too short for implatation. I was surprised when my dr. recommended clomid as well as it is for ovulation and per ovulation test, I was ovulating. He said when a couple has issues conceiving, that is the most common perscription doctors give to start with as it resolves over 50% of issues and it is cheap.
I tried it and I conceived that first month. There were no side effects... you take it for 5 days at the beginning of your cycle and then start trying. We now have our perfect 4 month old son. Good luck.
