Anyone Else Have Recurring Back Pain After Childbirth C Section /Spinal?

The exact place on my spine where they inserted the needle hurts terribly to this day (nearly five months later). Now, when the dr did the spinal they dug around for half an hour and really messed up. They had to keep pulling the needle out and putting it back in, starting over, on and on. The resident doing it was even questioned by the attending after he finished, etc. I have had terrible pain on my spinal cord ever since. It hurts if I bend over (the same way they have you bend over when they do the spinal). I don't know if this is normal. Is this just bruising on the spinal cord? I don't know if there is anything that can be done for it. Anyone else have this?

Yes I have problems too but a chiropractor has done wonders for me. I had two csects with horrible back problems after in my spine right at that spot. Don't expect results right away I finally got relief after my 6th appt & had a really bad spasm in between where I was in bed for two days. Don't stop going because you think he's doing more harm than good like I almost did.

I have a 2 month old and have this problem as well. When I bend over it feels like there is a ball in my lower back. Or if I stay in a certain position it tends to really get sore and stiffen up. Sometimes I feel a little numbness as well.

To this day, 4.5 years after giving birth to my daughter, I cannot lay on my stomach without my back completely freezing up. I had pain after my first epidural too, and didn't share that info with my doctor in fear they wouldn't allow me to get an epidural with my 2nd child. I think I am prone to pain there, as I have always had issues with my back. If I do have a 3rd child, you bet I will get another epidural again too. I will just deal with the after pain, which in my opinion is a heck of a lot less than back labor, etc...

Any long lasting pain is not normal I think. I did not have c section, but did have Epidural in the back. I did not feel anything during, afer or since- i's been 3 years almost.

This totally happened to me. I was stuck 6 times before they could get my spinal in. I was told that I have "weird" anatomy. This happened with both of my c-sections. I remember that I was still having a lot of pain after 6 months in my lower back. My doctor told me that it would eventually go away, and it did. I don't remember it hurting after about 7-8 months. Don't worry, it should go away soon.

I had the same thing, and since I was nursing I couldn't take meds, ouch! It took nearly 4 years as well as two cycles of PT and a few visits to a chiropractor to fully resolve. Ask your MD for a referral to a PT who specializes in manual therapy. I am not sure where you are located, but I had a very good experience seeing Dr. Richard Ezgur from Progressive Chiropractic in Chicago. He also used acupuncture, massage (both covered by insurance) and then a few homeopathic remedies ($15 each, I used two kinds, so a total of $30 for three months). For physical therapy, I went out to Naperville Physical Therapy, in Naperville. It may be a hike for you, but it was well worth the investment in time and travel. My insurance covered it in full for 20 sessions over two years. I am 100% now, but it did take a lot of work and it would have never healed on its own, in my opinion.

I had the same thing happen with my second c-section. The woman doing the spinal couldn't get it in right and tried three or four times sending ligtening pain through my spine and legs....I nearly screamed ( I would have rather been in full labor)...I kept telling her my spine was messed up and she needed to go up my spine for it to work...after three or four of attempts in the same place I reached back and grabbed her hand....told her if she stabbed me one more time I was going to lose every ounce of my Christian testimony. She told me she couldn't do it again and called in the head of anesthesia. I told him my spine was messed up and he went right up the middle of the spine and popped it in....OH WHAT A RELIEF IT WAS!

I had pain in that spot for two years. It gradually decreased and occured less often until I rarely feel the pain now. With my third child and c-section I made sure the doctor's knew before I went back that they couldn't attempt it in my lower spine and if they didn't feel comfortable doing it higher up, then they would need to make sure a very experienced doctor was on duty.

No problems with the third one. Went smooth as silk. If they can't pop that thing right in, then they need to back off. I hurt for two years. It was not fun and I didn't appreciate being a practice dummy. One try maybe, but not three or four. That was excruitiating.

It will go away...at least it did with me, but it was not right that I had to endure so much and experience pain for so long.

Chronic back pain is rooted in repressed anger. This book is helpful~Mind Over Back Pain by Dr John Sarno. Some people have even experienced healing just by reading it.

This is a very sad and common side effect of epidurals/spinals that hospitals gloss over if they tell you at all. They really mess around with your body! This is not "normal" but is probably not that uncommon. I would get a chiropractor's opinion. You could try a conventional doctor but they did this to you and I just don't know if they could do anything or not, though it can't hurt to ask an OB/GYN. I'm so sorry this happened to you! I pray you recover fully. Blessings
BEWARE OF EPIDURALS/SPINALS LADIES!!!! It is no small thing to have someone poking around in your spine.

Hi M.,

I also had a spinal (10 years ago)and the Dr. stuck me 12 times before finally calling in someone else. I didn't have bad pain, but could feel where the needle went in for quite a while afterwards. I would call your OB and ask them if it is something that you should have checked out, just to be sure. Good luck!!

Hi M.,

I also had this pain on my spine. My doc said it was nerve damage from the epidural. He also said it would heal, but nerves grow very slowly so it takes a long time to get back to normal. I would say my spine felt better in about a year. It's been 7 years and I have zero pain in that spot and haven't for years.

If you are concerned, talk to your doc or see an orthopedist.

Good luck!

M.,

I did not have a c-section, but when the did the epidermal I went through the same pain. I have had this pain for 8 years. An anesthesiologist told me that the epidermal was done wrong. Physical therapy helps a lot. I just have to not be lazy and do it. I didn't find out till 5 years later so i could not sue the hospital.

This doesn't sound good to me. I would talk to another doctor and consider hiring a lawyer.

I had an epidural (but not a c-section) with my both of my sons. With my second son it took close to an hour for the anesthesiologist to place the needle correctly. I had pain in that spot for close to a year. It wasn't severe pain, just some aching whenever I moved certain ways. It eventually went away on its own.

I had this when I had my first child by c-section (and had aldready gone through 3 epidurals and almost 30 hours labor). It was right where they put the needle and was pretty aggravating and painful. I even thought part of the needle might have broken off inside me. I did not do anything particular, but it did take some time to go away.

My son is 14 months old and I have had back pain where the epidural was. They had to knock me out to do the C-sect because I was not numbing like I should have. My back hurts with the weather still, but I also have a curved spine. But the pain from the epidural has gone away. I think everyone reacts differently. Talk to the doc. but it does take 1 year for your body to get back to normal and sometimes longer. We had to get a new mattress because our old one was bad. Good luck.

that is not normal. Go see a dr or chiropractor. My back has never bothered me. Especially if they were digging around, they prbly did something to the nerves. See a dr before it gets worse or you have another baby.

Hi M.,

I had a spinal block/C-section for my daughter's birth, and I would say that no, this does not sound normal. I did not have any pain in my back or spinal cord whatsoever at the time it was done or anytime in the years since. I would hope that a qualified anesthesiologist was the person who did your procedure, but I'm not sure it sounds that way from your description. It sounds to me that you ought to have an exam by either your primary care doctor, OB/Gyne, or a specialist of some kind. Although I am not a physician myself, my mom was a nurse for many years, and I've been through one spinal block and one (V-bac) epidural, and had no problems at all after either one. It seems to me that if it was just bruising on your spinal cord, it would have healed quite a while before now. I don't intend to be alarming, but you may have a legal case against this resident and/or the hospital where you had your spinal block. I certainly hope that this isn't the case, but there could be some major or even permanent nerve damage in your spine. You should be able to bend over normally without any pain. If this were me, I would go and get checked out by a different doctor immediately.

Best wishes to you, and please let us know how things go for you.
