I recently had to take my Avalanche for an emmission test and my chk engine light was on, I went to autozone also, they gave me the reciept with what it needed and also recommended me to a shop since I was new in the area. BIG MISTAKE. I took my truck and they charged me at first 500.00 than told me it needed 300 more because they didnt know which computer thing needed to be chg, I was so desperate to get it repair because it was the end of the mth and I did not want to drive with an expired plates I just paid. It did pass but a by the following mth the light went on again. Very Upset.. Well now im having a problem with my Chevy monte carlo that already has the plate expired but I am just so scared of taking it anywhere because what they will charge me. Anybody that can help me out with a good mechanic in the elgin, streamwood, schaumburg area will greatly appreciate it . Thank you!

What can I do next?

We have been going to and trust the people at the Merlin in Elk Grove on Meacham and Biesterfirld Roads in the same plaza as McDonald's. They are fair and honest. Found them about 5 years ago and haven't been sorry. Good luck - car trouble is sooo frustrating!

Burd's Auto Bay on Barrington Rd in Schaumburg. We feel we finally found an honest mechanic. We had several estimates to fix our car ranging from $1500 to $800. Bill Burd fixed it for under $200. Other shops thought is was a major problem, but Bill found a simple solution. Now that may not be the case for every problem with every car--the vast money diff--but we have been taking our vehicles (5, with kids in college) to him for a couple years now and are satisfied. He is located on Barrington, north of Schaumburg Rd (Target) and south of Golf Rd in an auto repair mall behind Thornton's gas station. You may mention our name as a recommendation: Kris Mandley.

We live in Elgin and take our vehicles to Boss Automotive. It's a small shop and Mark, the owner, is good and honest about his work and prices. It's not always cheap, but they don't rip you off, either.

I don't know of anyone, but be careful of mom & pop shops on that stuff. I know Chevy has a 10 year / 100,000 mile warranty on emmisions related repairs. If you go to one of those shops vs an authorized dealer, you may pay for something that would be covered under warranty.

I am sorry to hear about your car problems and getting ripped off. I know one good mechanic in the Algonquin IL area right off of Route 62. Company name is Parkside Auto, talk to Steve. I highly recommend him. My family and I have taken our cars to him for years. I hope this helps you.

I take my car to Selga in Carol stream on St. Charles. They are very good and very honest. I've referred several people there, and they all have had excellent care there.

Hi...a little farther than the areas you mentoned, but CK Auto Repair on Roosevelt Rd in Glen Ellyn is very honest and very reputable. Their prices are lower than a lot of places. They have lots of incentives and a newsletter and coupons. Their phone number is ###-###-####. They are about 1/2 mile east of I 355. Easy to get to...if you go there, tell them K. Schlabach/Gilbert Sosa referred you. (We get a prize!)
I've referred several people and they are all extremely pleased with their work and their price!

I LITERALLY just asked this same thing! i too have to take my car in for emmissions test and my check engine light has been on for 2 months!!! obviously we have to pass in order to get new plates!

i live in Schaumburg and asked too for a decent shop to go to w/o getting ripped off - because EXACTLY what happened to you is what i want to avoid since my dh was out of work all summer and we can't afford something like that! so check out my thread - look under automotive i believe is where i posted it there is a whole list of people who recommended me to places that are good! look for my post!

Hi S.!

This might be a bit of a drive, but Kammes Auto and Truck Repair on Army Trail road in Bloomingdale or it might be Hanover Park is an outstanding repair shop! They have worked on all our vehicles and I have been VERY pleased with their service and the quality of work they have given. I believe it is hard to find a quality, dependable and honest shop these days and we trust Kammes 100%.

Good Luck!
