Hello - I have a two month old that had a diaper rash for the first two months he was here and when I stopped drinking milk the diaper rash went away completely. He also would poop all the time but it was just a little bit at a time and everytime I would change his diaper there would be at least a little bit in there, it was almost like he had diarhea. Now that I have stopped drinking milk that has also stopped, he is pooping normal now. Does this mean he has an allergy to milk or that he is just lactose intolerant? If anyone has any ideas or suggestions please let me know.

What can I do next?

It does not necessarily mean that. He may just be really sensitive to dairy right now. Just give it another month or two and try again!

good luck!

i would think that it is lactose intollerance. my baby has alot of problems with food that he gets from me through my milk. i have to avoid wheat, barly, rye and oats. i used to have to avoid milk, but he can tollerate it just fine now. he even eats cheese and yogurt now. i would give him a lactose intollerance enzyme therapy everyday and it made a huge differance. from drugstore.com, check out childrens daily lactose intollerance therapy from digestive advantage. i would disolve a half a tab in a teaspoon of water and give that to him evey morning, per my doctors orders. it really made a huge differance!

Hi T.,
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Only time will tell. Give it a month and then drink milk again for a day or two. See how he reacts to it then.
I had to stop drinking milk for about 6 months because my daughter had the same reactions as your son. But now, at a year old, she drinks whole milk in her sippy cup.

Hi T.:
Treat both the same. Lactose intolerance is like an allergy to milk. I had to go off all dairy when I was nursing. My baby is still lactose intolerant of age 4. Most people are adversely affected by cow's milk. Please consider organic soy milk. It is quite tasty. We always drink vanilla soy. There is low fat and non-fat varieties as well. You can also try Rice milk and hemp milk. We use soy cheese, there's lots of good stuff out there.
Peace to the bowels!

My son is allergic to milk and I spent a lot of time with the doctors and online to get answers. The number one thing to remember is that if he is having a problem with you eating dairy, it's because he's having a problem with the protiens in cow's milk, casein and whey. It is almost unheard of for a baby to be lactose intolerant, because breastmilk is largely composed of lactose and he'd have to be on a special amino acid formula for nutrition. The reason I point that out is because if you eliminate dairy from your diet, you can not substitute lactose free products, you have to go with soy or rice milk. It's not easy to go dairy free, it's in just about everything out there. I learned the hard way, because if I so much as ate a bite of something with a little bit of whey protein, my son would break out and scream for hours... it started at 3 weeks and he seemed to get more sensitive as he got older. He recently weaned himself, so I can eat whatever I want now, but he still hasn't outgrown the allergy... last month he ate a piece of bread that had dairy in the ingredients and it took a week for the rash to go away! Good luck, it's going to be a tough change, but it's so worth it!

I understand your question very well. Both of my boys were lactose intolerant when they were baby's. One of them would get a rash all over and the other one would have 5 bowel movements a day, which would breakdown his skin. I gave them soy milk instead. When they turned 1, they outgrew the intolerance and now drink regular milk. Good luck. He will probably outgrow it. Soy milk is very good for babies.

My baby girl screamed in pain for the first 2 weeks until I stopped drinking milk and then she was fine. I stopped drinking milk and milk products while I was nursing, but she outgrew the problem. I started giving her milk products (yogurt first) at 11 months or so, and went slowly and we had absolutely no adverse affects. He will probably outgrow it, but ya never know!! So cease and desist all dairy. You get used to the soy stuff - I actually prefer it now!

You should mention this to the babies doctor! I BF my daughter and she rarely ever had a rash until I introduced solids and cow's milk, but she was 1 year old before I introduced cow's milk. She had a very red rash the first few days she was drinking whole milk. I laid off the whole milk for a few more weeks and when I tried it again, she didn't get a rash. I rarely drink milk myself. It could be the milk you are drinking, most definitely. I'd eliminate it from your diet for a couple of weeks and see if the rash comes back. Try soy or rice milk for yourself in the meantime.

I also had the same problem, and unfortunatly for me, I couldnt eat dairy for 8 months.(I did try the lactose free milk, and that didnt seem to bother her at all) The fortunate thing is my 9 mo old daughter can now eat yogart and cheese, and I can have dairy again. The doctor said her stomach was just a little more sensitive. So maybe you cant have dairy for a few months, but your son will be a little happier, and it wont be for too long. Good luck!

An allergy cannot be determined until the child is about 2yrs old. For now he is sensitive to dairy. I went through the same thing with my oldest. I had to avoid dairy for the 20mo she was nursing. I then started giving her rice milk. At 3yrs old she can eat dairy products on occasion but can't drink milk. My son is sensitive to wheat, gluten and eggs. At 16mo he still reacts if I eat any of those foods. It takes a minimum of 1yr for a child's digestive system to mature enough to tolerate most foods. For now just avoid dairy and you can try again when he is 6mo old. It is best to wait until after age 1 when his system is more mature to reintroduce. Breastmilk is best for him for as long as possible. It will help strengthen his system and provide him all the nutrients he needs.
