Go to Cozumel, it is safe and close to Cancun and there are beautiful resorts that are all inclusive there. Family of mine just went this past February, they loved, loved, loved it and would go back in a heart beat. The resort they stayed at even had a dolphin encounter called Dolphinaris. It looked like so much fun. they said they even had day care options and kid activities. Good luck and have fun where ever you go. :-)

ooohhhh darn - I can't remember the name - we went to Cancun in '06 without the kids - but the resort was family friendly....Royal something. I'm sorry - i

Keep in mind - the airport and Cancun aren't close - you will be in a bus or taxi for about 30 minutes maybe a bit longer....

I also recommend Cozumel. Very beautiful, nice little town, the all-inclusives are great (we stayed at Iberostar), and you are pretty well isolated from the border violence. There isn't much violence in Cancun, but it's much more susceptible to it since it's on the mainland; since Cozumel is an island it's pretty immune.

My opinion is a little different...I don't like all inclusive. When I am traveling with my kids, drinking a lot is not what I am looking to do. I feel like the prices at all inclusives are not a good deal unless you do your share of drinking!! I don't know anything about the safety issues but I certainly would check. Although, anywhere you go, you will find some story about incidents with tourists.
We stayed at the Hilton in Cancun. You can get a junior suites for 239 a night right now that includes a separate bedroom and a huge balcony with a hot tub facing the ocean!!! The regular rooms are great too...but that junior suite is incredible!! The closet in the regular room was so big that the pack and play fit inside so the baby could sleep while we moved around the room. (I know some of you won't want a baby in the closet but we thought of it as a small room......) We loved the resort for our little kids because they have a series of pools that lead from the hotel to the ocean. The ones nearest the building are only a foot deep. The next is about 2 foot deep, the next is 3 foot deep, and so on until you reach the huge main pool that is 5-6 foot deep. I loved to soak up the sun while the kids played safely in the shallow pools with me!! We had the pools to ourselves much of the time! The food was great there too! We ate many meals at the hotel. Kids meals were available and free!! The beach there is big and beautiful. My kids loved playing in the sand. Good luck. If you want any more info, send me a message. Have fun!!!

We JUST got back from Cozumel. We stayed at the Park Royal and had a great time. The resort is 3.5 stars, but we stayed at a resort in Puerto Vallarta two years ago that was 4 stars, and the Park Royal topped it by a mile.

We did not at any time feel unsafe on the island. That being said, in a way we consider ourselves lucky. We had assumed that all the drug-related violence was still concentrated around the border towns, but that's just not true any more. Here are two stories, from June and November of last year, that tell about drug cartel-related murders occurring near Acapulco and Cancun:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-11705372

We have decided we probably won't go back to Mexico until their war on the drug lords is over. If you do decide to go, I would definitely recommend Cozumel over Cancun, for safety reasons. If you are intent on staying in Cancun, then be very careful about traveling anywhere outside of the resort, even on public transportation--one of the stories I enclosed tells of some tourists whose bus was taken hostage.

Definitely check out the American Embassy, Mexico web page before you go, to get any recent updates and advisories.

I worked in The Royal Cancun hotel and it was nice, but I have to second the other moms, Cozumel is so beautiful, more child friendly, cheaper, more traditional, the people is very relax and friendly. Then again I haven't get there in many years so things may have change, but when I use to live there I would rather go to Cozumel.
EDIT:
Sorry I just gave it a second thought, even if Cozumel is more beatiful, Cancun is more organized and better transportation and have more All-inclusive hotels which maybe a better idea with a 4 month old baby.

We went to Cancun many years ago and loved it- sorry but I cant remember where we stayed. I just wanted to say please do some research before you decide to take your family to Mexico. It is very dangerous right now.

Whatever you choose, have fun :)
