Acid Reflux in a Newborn

Hello, I asked a question a few weeks ago regarding how to manage acid reflux in my newborn and got a tremendous response. I just have one more question. My daughter is 6 weeks old, and is taking liquid zantac for reflux. She does not feel the pain of the reflux, but the zantac does not stop the reflux from coming up. Primarily at night, the amount of reflux coming up is so bad that we can hear it all gurgling in her throat and sometimes nasal passages. Although she's obviously not, it sounds like she's drowning! It happens randomly throughout the day too and sometimes she starts coughing because of it. We also have her on Enfamil Nutramigen to help the reflux but it doesn't seem to be helping and we've been talking about whether or not we should go back to the regular formula.

Has anyone ever experienced this with their child? And if so, is there anything to be done for it, medication or otherwise? We tried Prevacid prior to the zantac and that didn't do much for her. Is there any other medication I could ask our pediatrician about?

One last thing. I could be crazy, but it seems like the more liquid zantac I give her, the worse the gurgling in her throat is. I'm supposed to give her one ml twice a day, but if I cut it down to 0.4, she still has no pain but the gurgling is less. Anybody know anything about that?!?!

Thank you!

Hi C.!

I'm sorry to hear about your little one's acid reflux problem! Our child had a small amount of this along with not wanting to breast feed on one side. Rather than trying any medications, we decided to go a more natural approach and got him adjusted. Just the process of being born is traumatic for baby's spines and having them under chiropractic care helps them get healthy and stay healthy since they're nerve supply to all organs in their body gets fully supplied again. Anyhow, without getting into the science of it, our little guy had some problems and so we decided when he was 1 week old to get him adjusted. He ate immediately on the side he had been refusing and the spitting up/acid reflux type symptoms went down dramatically and continued to improve. He went about once every 4-5 weeks to our family chiropractor and is now 19 months old and has been the easiest baby and toddler. Chiropractic really works. The results are amazing! Let me know if you have any questions!

both my kids had reflux. And we found that zantac didn't do much. Prilosec worked the best for them. And for my son we propped his matress on one end so he was at a slight incline at night, that helped keep the acid down. Also I don't know if you breast or bottle feed. But I breast fed during the day and they gave a bottle of formula before bed because it was thicker and also helped keep the acid down. So I would maybe talk with your doc some more about it. But from what i understand zantac has a short half life and doesn't stay working for very long. So I would ask about a prilosec.

My daughter had the same thing still does every so often. I give her previcid solutab (dissolves instantly), along with that I was told by my WIC nutritionist that making sure she is burped very good and propped up like on your chest helps eliminate as much reflux. I did that and my daughters reflux dramatically decreased. And it will eventually go away but this is very mormal.

My son had that to really bad. He was put on prevacid too. I don't know how you feed her but we had to put rice in my sons bottle. 3oz water 1oz formula or alittle more if seems too liquidy. This is to help the food stay down easier and then while you feed her sit her up right for the whole feeding. Then keep her up right for as long as you can with trying to get any burps out. If you can elevate the head area of where she sleeps or, car seat, bouncy chair thats deep has straps, you can lie her in that to sleep. I know it sounds crazy. Thats what we had to do. We'd feed him then as soon as we were done he'd puke like the excoricst then lie him down start puking and choking because its always came out of his nose and mouth same time. We had a suction for his mouth and nose. Then did the formula thing, up right eating, up right burping, and up right for at least 1/2 hour longer better, and finally put him in a car seat and or bounce chair, strapped him in or tucked him in very tight and it got better. She'll no matter what have her good and bad days but hopefully you find something that works. Its hard and you feel aweful there's nothing you can do. They say 8-9 months is when they grow out of it. Sometimes sooner sometimes exactly 8-9. Good luck
