A Bump Under the Skin

I just found a bump under the skin of my leg when I was shaving. It's right below my knee, right in the middle of my leg. It doesn't hurt, but you can move it around (kinda gross). You wouldn't be able to tell I had a bump there if you didn't feel it. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It sounds like it could be a fatty cyst.. Which is what I suspected. It doesn't bother me at all but I will keep an eye on it and probably get it checked out, but there's probably no need to rush into the doctor. Thanks everyone!

Good Morning,
I use to have some bumps on the top of my shins, the Dr. told me they were calcuim deposits. I was given a cream and they went away.

Sounds like a lymph node. They are in certain areas of your body and sometimes they become inflamed for some reason. I've had them in my cheek near my mouth and near my armpit. My daughter had one in the back of her neck. If that's what it is, it's normal. It sounds like it. I'm not sure though if they are in the back of your knee. They eventually go away, but I've had them for months before they down.

I agree with everyone elses diagnoses...it sounds like a cyst. I've had one on my upper arm for years. :-)

I have something similar on my thigh and my doctor told me it is the same thing - fatty cyst. She said if it's not bothersome, it's nothing to worry about, although if it gets bigger then definitely get it checked out!

I had something like this on my calf. The dr. told me it was a fatty cyst and removed it.
Could it be an ingrown hair or something of that nature? I would just call my dr. and see what they said. Never hurts to get it looked at.

I have a bump just under my elbow. It feels like there is a frozen pea in my arm. No pain at all from it...it's just there. It kinda moves a bit to if you play with it. I was told that it was a calcium deposit and harmless. May also be cyst as others described.

I had something similar on my back - it was a cyst. I decided to have it removed because it started to bother me when my waist-band of my pants rubbed against it. My primary care physician just took care of it in the office - very easy procedure. I'd go have it checked out if it bothers you.

C.,

It does sound like a cyst. I had one in my wrist. My surgeon (I also had it removed - it was pinching a nerve in my hand) told me that a general rule is that any "moveable" type of lump (meaning you can push it around under the skin) is usually a sign of a cyst, or benign type of mass. The masses that are anchored and are unmoveable (and hard) are the types to usually worry about! If it bothers you - go see your doctor!

Good luck!

It could be a blood clot....my brother used to get them in his legs like that. It would not hurt to go have it checked out. Blood clots can be dangerous if they are able to move...in and out of blood stream.

Hi C., I had a hard bump on my ring finger a year ago, my doctor sent me to a great hand sugen to have it looked at and they decided that I should have it removed because it was on my knuckle and some mornings when I got out of bed it had felt like I had my finger slamed in a door and if I bumped my finger which I do quite a bit it hurt so badly that it made me cry. Now I am faced with it again I think and have to wait a month to see if it gets bigger. I say go have it looked at.

It's probably a lymph node or cyst, research on WebMD or google for more info. All normal, but to ease your nerves check up with your doctor. My friend has several on her chest and the doctor said as long as it's not bothering her or it's not painful, then it's fine to stay. My husband had a cyst in his palm and could move it back and forth, but was surgically removed because it became painful.

Hi C.-
I'm a nurse, and from what you've described, I would guess it's a lipoma (fatty cyst) like the other responder said she had too. I've seen them fairly often with some of the patients I work with and they are usually no big deal, but worth getting checked out; like the other responder said, you could possibly have it removed if it is bothersome to you.

Hope this is helpful :)
