9-Month-old Son Spins in Exersaucer Until He's Dizzy

I know this is not a typical question, but I have a 9-month-old son who loves his exersaucer. It has a seat that spins very easily - I think it must have rollerballs somewhere in the mechanism since it can really spin. He loves spinning and spinning in it, maybe 30-40 rotations at a time - kind of like a ballet dancer doing pirouette after pirouette. It is certainly amusing to watch, but it has dawned on me that maybe it is somehow harmful to his brain to be spinning all the time like that at such a young age. When he stops each time, he has a totally dizzy, dopey look on his face with a goofy smile. Then, after he has enjoyed his dizziness for half a minute or so, he goes back to doing it all over again. Should I stop letting him do this, or should I enjoy every second of it and be glad that he is so self-entertaining?

What can I do next?

Did you ever ride amusement/carnival rides as a kid? Weren't the ones that made you really dizzy almost to the point of throwing up the most fun ones?!?

Chances are your little boy has discovered a new way to move his body through space which includes a different, odd, yet fascinating feeling that he wants to recreate. Now, if it were me the idea of spinning in a circle makes me nauseous, but for kids it just feels really cool. Dizziness is caused by the spinning of the fluid in the semi-circular canals in the ears; the brain is just fine.

Ask your pediatrician to get clarity. The only thing I'd worry about with the exersaucer is keeping him in for a maximum of 30 minutes a day, as reliance on the apparatus to hold him up could delay core muscle development needed for learning to walk.

I asked my doctor about this when my kids were little. I was assured that they were fine and no shaken baby syndrome could happen that way. So, let her spin - unless she is barfing afterwards she is fine.

Hi L.,

My daughter did this too. She loved her exersaucer more than any other toy. She's 6 now and she's perfectly fine in every way.

If you're concerned, give your peds office a call tomorrow just to reassure yourself.

Best of luck! :)

It won't hurt him. My daughter used to do the same thing, and I asked the doctor about it, and he said some children just enjoy doing that! My daughter is now 11 years old, and perfectly fine!

Welcome to the world of raising a dare devil. My son did this too, he loved to be thrown high in the air and caught. All the stuff that makes moms crazy. He now races go karts! Once a daredevil always a dare devil. They sure are fun to watch as they grow. Enjoy it but like everyone else says, check with your ped just to be sure!
