7 1/2 Month Old Not Rolling over Yet

My sweet little boy is taking his sweet time rolling over. He has rolled from his tummy to his back probably 3 times in the last 2 months and never from his back to his tummy. When I mentioned it to his doctor at the 6-month appointment he told me not to worry as he has a "girth issue"--in other words he's a fat baby :). I think he could roll from his back to tummy--he'll roll all the way onto his side, but when he starts to go over he corrects himself--I almost wonder if he dislikes the sensation of rolling? He is meeting all his other milestones fine--sitting up, babbling like crazy (I swear he says "da" for dog and kaka for "kitty"), stands holding your fingers. But, of course, I can't help but worry about his lack of rolling! Anyone else experience something like this?

What can I do next?

Not one of my kids started rolling until 9 months old. Well, actually my first did try rolling around the 6 month mark, but quickly decided he didn't like it and wouldn't try again until a couple months later. You're baby will get it, just be patient:)

THis sounds just like my daughter. When she was 7 months old (she' 3 yrs now) she still hadn't successfully tackled rolling over. The pedi told us the same thing-she's just so darn fat! We made an appointment with early intervention, just to be safe, but she didnt qualify for services because rolling was the only delay that she had. If it continues to be a problem for the next month or so I'd probably look into making an appointment with PT/OT, or early intervention just to get their opinion, and maybe offer some suggestions.

Based on the fact that he's hitting all of his other milestones AND he's talking really well I wouldn't worry at all about rolling over. One milestone out of dozens and dozens of milestones isn't usually something to fret over. Especially if he's a bit pudgy :-). Just give him some tummy time and maybe he'll skip rolling over completely and go straight to crawling. Sure, it's good to practice rolling over because of the muscles that it uses, but you can get him to use those muscles in play in other ways and maybe give him some motivation to overcome a difficult task.

Every baby is different =)

My 8 month old started rolling at almost 5 months, crawling at 7 months, and now is trying to walk (I keep telling him to calm down, but he doesn't listen!). My sisters baby is almost 6 months and doesn't roll, barely can sit, and really has no interest in doing either. I am positive, though, that her baby will eventually do it. I would be concerned if he isn't rolling at 10 months or a year, but you should be fine now! If he corrects himself, maybe he just doesn't like the unbalanced feeling?

My daughter didn't roll over for a long time either. I think some babies are just more motivated to reach physical milestones than others. She also didn't crawl until 11 months and walk until 14 months, but she is FINE!! (She's 2.5 now and busy as a bee!).

If you told me he hadn't crawled yet and he started walking first I would not be surprised. Different children do things in different time frames. My daughter was walking when her cousin 8 mos older could barely pull himself up with the help of the sofa. He was so much bigger in weight and height than she was.
Your baby can roll over as you know from back to stomach. He will roll the other way. He'll do so when motivated.
Your son is perfectly normal.

My first son was a chubby baby, too, and not much of a roller either. I wouldn't be worried at all. He is four and a half now and does everything he should. :-)

I wouldn't worry. Every baby develops at differant times. Unless he seems like he is having pain or something like that when he tries to roll over, it's probably like your Dr. said a "girth issue". I am sure one day soon he will roll over and not stop!

My son was later than others in rolling over and sitting up. So was his son an daughter. They were taller and heavier than other children. I never worried about it. Remember 6 months is the average age for rolling over. That means that some are earlier and some later. You could give your son swimming lessons to get him moving (and more active) toward crawling if you are concerned about the rolling over and crawling issue. Or you could just wait and let him do it in his own time.

PS, by the time he is walking no one will know (except you) that he was late in rolling over.
