6 Month Old Son Screaming @ Night

So, I've just gotten used to my 6 month old son moving his schedule around, which is fine. He will sleep when he needs it. For the last few nights, he has been waking up 2 or 3 times crying. The new thing is he is unable to soothe himself to calm down now. Once I get him out of his crib, and he is asleep instantly in my arms. But the second I lay him down, he's screaming again. Before his last bottle, we are giving him 2 or 3 teething tablets in his bottle and some tylenol as well. He's been teething for a few weeks to a month, but those little teeth aren't poking through. He has been sleeping through the night for almost 2 months now. What's happened, and how can I help get him back to sleeping through the night. Mama's tired!

What can I do next?

Honestly, I think you should just pick him up, do whatever it takes to get him back to sleep and put him down again. If he wakes up he is not really asleep yet and feels like you are abandoning him and he doesn't like it. Start pleasant sleep associations that don't involve you if you have not done this already. I like the music aquariuam that the baby can push himself if he needs soothing. A mobile, and a lovie are also good. For whatever reason he is feeling sensitive and wants love from you. I think give him what he needs and make the crib as safe and wonderful place as possible. Soon, he will not need you if he wakes up...this is my experience at least. Teething can take a while...definetly makes babies much more sensitive.

He may have what they call an a-symptomatic ear infection (no fever, etc). It happened to my daughter and the only thing that made me realize it was bothering her was that she wouldn't lay down flat. Its a long shot but I'd have it checked out. Apparently ear infections don't necessarily come with a fever so they can be "silent".

Try putting him to sleep in his baby swing, vibrating chair or even a car seat so he can be upright. I did this with both of my kids for as long as they needed/wanted (which ended up being several months) it and it was no trouble at all to get them back into their cribs. Being upright has the additional benefits of helping with digestion and reducing the amount of pressure on the back of his head to avoid a "flat" spot. So do it and be proud, because really...you both just need to get that sleep!

One other thing that comes to mind is a possible ear infection. They aren't always accompanied by a fever or other symptoms, but if he does have one, laying down flat will make the pain more intense. So if this has come on suddenly and is unusual for him, I would suggest making an appointment with the Ped.

my daughter did exactly the same, like she was crying while sleeping. sometimes i didn't even pick her up- she stopped crying and still was sleeping. we think (with our sis) that it's brain development thing, or maybe nightmares. if its not the thing that my baby had maybe it's teething (we use orajel). i don't think that giving baby so often any kind of medicine (as tylenol) is good - it's still chemical thing. funny thing about teething: people were telling us since she was 3 months old that the reason why she's moody, putting her hands into her mouth, crying is because she's teething---- her first toooth came out when she was 9 months old:)!!!!!

the first thing that comes to mind is to not put the teething tablets in the bottle. Homeopathy needs to be used differently. Put directly in his mouth. My son loves them and they dissolve quickly. Then about 15 minutes later give him his bottle. The tablets needs to dissolve directly on his tongue in order to give the full effect.
He may also need more tablets. How do you know if the teething tablets are working if you give tylenol at the same time? I would try just the teething tablets and no tylenol. It kind of defeats the purpose of using something natural when you are using tylenol anyway:)
Hang in there...babies change their schedules as soon as we think they are on one...keeps us on our toes.
My little boy started teething at 3 months...I could tell by his behavior etc. He has still not broken a tooth but his teething has not been so extreme thanks to homeopathy. We have not needed to use tylenol and he was in extreme pain.
Just to be certain make sure he is not dealing with an ear infection...they can mimick teething symptoms.

If he was sleeping through the night and suddenly isn't, I think it warrants a trip to the doctor's office. After 2 nights of not sleeping well I take my kids in. Every single time they end up being sick. An ear infection gets worse at night and can be ok during the day. He may also be going through a growth spurt and be in need of more food. Good Luck tired Mama!

Do you feed him when he wakes up? Maybe he is hungry. Or give him a pacifier or swaddle or try a white noise CD. You just have to try everything, and if nothing works sometimes letting them cry is what you have to do. I tried the no cry sleep solution and tons of things for my daughter and the only thing that worked was a couple of difficult nights when I just let her cry. Then it was like a miracle and she slept through from then on. But she was 9 mos old before I was emotionally ready to do that. It's really hard. But looking back, I wished I had done it sooner. I was an exhausted wreck for too long. But do what feels right for you. I also went to a lot of natural docs to makes sure there was nothing wrong. It turned out mine had a mild parasite and handling that made her cry less, but I still had to do CIO at some point.

It sounds like the teething tablets and Tylenol aren't working....maybe stop them if you see no direct benefit. Why give him something if it dosen't help. My kids never needed anything for teething. If he's not like like this during the day too, then it's probably not teething. Have you ruled out ear infection? Otherwise, it just sounds like he needs to learn how to go back to sleep by himself. It takes a while. We just calmly told the kids to go back to sleep without holding them and would wait 5 min. longer each time before we came in. It worked, but it doesn't happen overnight.

6 months is a growth spurt month.
And I agree with the previous poster , Beata.
Most of the time babies that sleep through the night early , ie before a year, start waking up later.
Teething can start WAY before you ever see teeth.

Try picking up the book " The no cry sleep solution" by elizabeth pantley.
