6 Month Old Allergic to Baby Oatmeal?

We started feeding our baby solids (rice cereal) at 6 months..that was a couple weeks ago. I had been exclusively breast feeding until then. Dr wanted him to also take an iron supplement/vitamin to make sure his intake is sufficient..so I filled the Rx. About a week after started feeding, I introduced oatmeal..and within a few days noticed the eczema on his cheeks..along with a couple of diarrhea's. Long story short..wasn't sure if it was the iron or the oatmeal, so I stopped both & did rice cereal for the next week. I gave the baby oatmeal again this past Monday & his rash came back & so did the diarrhea. I am really surprised & am wondering if anyone else's baby had this happen? I have started giving him the liquid vitamins again (yuck) & all seems to be back on track. I am nervous that he's going to have other allergies..I cut milk out of my diet when he was 3 mos for similar reasons... Thanks moms

My son who is now 8 months had a really similar experience. He did not tolerate oatmeal very well. Then I tried about a month later in small doses and he seems to do ok with so far. I think that thier bodies change so much and so fast. So may he just needs sometime.

I have a 1 yr old, she has had eczema since she was 3 mo old. We had some bad days but it's all clearing now. I was very dedicated to treating it and trying hard to do everything not to irritate it. She is allergic to many things but the Dr's say most of it will subside. She too is allergic to Oatmeal and had the same reaction, cow's milk, certain fruits and peas. Most of these allergies will go away, it just slows the food process down. Each time she has a reaction, we stop everything , go back to rice cereal until it clears and start with another food. Be patient and don't worry. I never gave her vitamins, there is plenty in the formula. I put a scoop of formula in with the rice cereal. You can add formula to almost any of the baby foods. I use Simlac Soy in the dark pink can.

my lil bub is allergic to a gang load of things. wheat, egg, soy, dairy, cat, peanut...Anyway, we go slow and his pediatrician says that he will most likely have a reaction everytime we introduce new foods. So he is on meds, sees an allergist, dermatologist and a pediatrician. He is getting better now. It did start around 3 mos of age and he is now 10 mos. I still breastfeed and try to avoid the biggies on his no no list. However, I can't avoid all things and he does need to be exposed to different things slowly. I don't give him anything with wheat, egg, dairy, peanut or soy eventhough I do eat things with wheat, dairy or soy. Oh and baked goods that have egg but never egg dishes itself. Hope this helps your peace of mind. When he has really bad breakout we put a foam on him (verdeso) but when it's not bad we put a cream (eletone) and lots and lots of cetaphil or mustela stellatopia lotion.

My Mother is allergic to oatmeal, AND gets eczema from it, as well as from Cheerios. She also gets this reaction from citrus things. However, she can eat other wheat things and other grain cereals. She has always had this tendency, although my sister and I did not inherit this allergy.

It's good you are giving him the liquid vitamins...sometimes babys & toddlers can get anemic due to lack of iron.

take care and I hope this gives you in insight for your son,
~Susan

Hi S., I have a now nine month old who too cannot stomach oatmeal. She never got a rash, but would spit it up in huge amounts all day! So I do not give it too her. She is also on nutramigen though, and gets no dairy at all. The only cereal she has ever been able to eat is rice, not even the mixed cereal. Doctor just says she has a very sensative stomach. But I am guessing the dairy and oatmeal must have something in them that they cannot tolerate, since both these make there bellies upset. Hope this helps....

My bambina did not tolerate any cereals well until about 8 months. Each time I tried, it was a night of screaming and diaper issues. I just started giving her one formula bottle a day. It is iron fortified (she was breastfed). She seemed to not mind the formula, and I felt better about the iron. She never had a problem with the baby meats. I started those around 6 months too. They are a source of iron as well. Good luck!

I had a similar reaction to the oatmeal. We started on rice and my baby was on the rice for about a month before I introduced oatmeal. He had a little dry patch on his cheek that got a lot worse. He also became very gassy. I thought it might be exzema and bought Aveno exzema cream. I used the cream for a couple of days. Last night I put the cream on his dry patch and on another spot on his forehead before bed. When he woke up his face was broken out in tiny bumps. After reading the label on the cream, the main ingredient is oatmeal. Needless to say, I have ceased all oatmeal use and consumption. We will see if the rash clears.

it could be an allergy to the oat meal. did you start him back on the iron when you gave him the oat meal? i would talk to your dr and see what he/she says about it. but most likely just stop giving the oat meal and your baby should be fine. maybe try the barley or mixed grain cereals with your baby to see if those are ok for him. keep him lotioned too so he doesnt irritate his already dry skin -- aveeno baby, gentle naturals eczema lotion and aquador are really good with eczema (we used all those on my twin nephews whos eczema got so bad they made huge sores on their ankles that bled and had to be cleaned 3 times a day) its good you notice that he had a reaction to it your very observant!

I know it can be hard, but keep trying. I have a friend whose daughter seemed to be allergic to everything... after about 6months of battling, things started to change. She finally got her blood work and tested and no allergies. Sometimes they grow out of it, othertimes they start to develop them and othertimes they just react to combinations. He's only 6mo old and the oatmeal may just be too hard on his system right now. I would stick with the rice cereal for now and check back with the oatmeal in a couple of months.

Best wishes,
C.~
