5yr.old Bedroom Theme to Grow with Her??

I did a garden fairy theme. The bottom part of her walls are just striped colors and the top is yellow. The only thing really "fairy" is the boarder in the middle. Her bedding has flowers and butterflies. We also painted a tree on her wall/celing with wind chimes that she collects hanging from it! When she gets older, we can change the boarder and bedding, but the paint could remain. And she has the pink net thing over her bed. We did this when she was 5 and I think it will last until 12-13??

We did my granddaughters room when she was 7 and did a girlfriend theme, it had a girlfriend border around the middle of the room and she is 13 now and the only thing that was updated was bed spread and pillows because the wall theme has gone into her teens.

I would suggest not going with a complete theme. Do a soft and neutral wall with a patterned bedding and linens. You can add "themed" accessories and rotate them out as she gets older!

My parents did this with us and it was great. As a child, I remember us having mint green walls, green and ivory paisley bedding with ivory curtains. When we were really young, we had Strawberry Shortcake throw pillows, posters and dolls. A few years later, it was ballet "stuff" and later it was "teen" posters and framed pictures. Because the base was neutral it lasted for years!~

We steer clear of themes, which get old quickly. I recently redid my 5 year old daughter's room and I chose a very, very pale pink for the walls. Her furniture (cream colored) is classic and it stayed. I bought 2 cream colored vintage chenille popcorn spreads and used one for the bed and the other I made into a window valance. I found a fantastic suzani ribbon on Etsy (http://www.etsy.com/listing/58810481/suzani-jacquard-trim...) and I sewed that on the edges of the spread, the window valance, and also glued it to a lampshade in her room. The ribbon was actually my jumping off point, I loved it so much.

I also framed some fun art work and photos in black frames and painted her middle closet sliding door in black chalkboard paint. Then found a super fun cream and black zebra print rug for the floor. So the colors ended up being milky pale pink, raspberry (ribbon trim, throw pillows for the bed, lamp I found), cream and black so it wasn't too syrupy sweet. We both love the color combo and it's definitely something she'll grow with.

I agree - make the permanant parts (walls, furniture) more neutral. Then with curtains, rugs, bedspread, wall art etc you can change that as she ages. My daughter is 4 and has a very muted blue (smokey light blue???) room. She currently likes princesses, so we have some pillows and blankets for her that she loves. When she outgrows those, we can change them out again

I avoid themes at all costs. I usually do a pretty color that will last, add some modern and vintage elements and fun things for their age, but that can grow with them. For example, a soft mint green paint, or a soft cream walls. You can add one or two Tinkerbell/Princess elements like a cute lamp or art on the walls if she likes, but maintain a balance in the colors, like a cute green pillow on her chair to tie in with tinks dress..

Curtains decorated with ribbons or a colorful bed canopy would be cute. Ohdeedoh has some of my favorite eclectic and themeless children's bedrooms:

I am just like you. I had a very neutral theme when my daughter was born. The walls were painted a color green that borders on mint/lime green. We changed her comforter set and valance to green and hot pink last year. It was like a modern floral design but young girl in nature. Now we found the cutest soft bright and large polka dot blanket (multi-color) with the green in it that she loves. We just saw the store make available the 8 piece comoforter set that matches. She loves it and it still has the green and her favorite color pink so it will go nicely in her room. If you are not repainting the room then pick out some pictures online or catlog that your daughter can chose from that she likes. Otherwise, if y ou are painting do the same thing based on the color you pick out.

My two daughters' personalities are total opposites. Oldest is very loud and her walls are yellow and royal blue, and her bedding was tie dye, now her bedding is pinks, blues, yellows, purples. My youngest's room is painted purple and her bedding has changed but always has purple in it. They've had these colors for 7 years now and they are 12 and 13. We've just changed bedding. Their furniture is white in the oldest and cherry in the youngest. Ask her what she would like and then go from there. Hope this helps. Good luck and God Bless.

Right now my 3 yo DD's room is painted a sort of mint/spring green color and if she decides when she's older she wants something else, we can always repaint it. She has cute wall decal stickers of butterflies, ladybugs, snails, flowers, etc. so we got a little bit of a garden thing going. The stickers peel off easily without damaging the paint, so they can be easily removed later.

I would start with a wall color and then look for pillows, etc. that can coordinate. I am not really a big fan of princess/fairy themes, or characters like Dora, but something consistent with the beach/surfing I think would be pretty cool.

We just redid my daughters room (she is 5 also) and we did pink walls with green and white circles. Her curtains are pink, cream, white and green. She also has white shelves for the "dustables". We also have a few princess pictures because that is what she is into right now but they are not expensive so when she is older we can change them very easily.

Paint all walls a neutral shade, cream, beige, etc. Then have one wall in which she can pick whatever she wants on it, maybe a few of her handprints made into a flower, or let her get creative (while supervised) if she's old enough. She could even choose stick on motifs and change the shapes/colours as she likes. And, like other moms have said, add accessories. If you have an Ikea nearby, take her and let her pick out some stuff, they've got great selection and cheap prices too!

You could paint her room her favorite color or neutral color and then buy wall stickers that come off easily. As time goes by, and her tastes change, you can buy other stickers or wall decorations of her choice. :) Also, you can buy a really nice single colored comforter set and accesorize it with pillows, throws, curtains..... of whatever she is into at that moment. That way, when she is ready to change, you are not putting out a lot of money for redecorating.

Another really cute idea I have seen is to have one wall painted with the blackboard paint. Even teens love this.

I LOVE the beach so my daughter's room is painted sky blue with a white bed, dresser and night table. We then had a huge palm tree painted on one wall and a window that looks out to the ocean and beach on another wall above her bed. She has had her room like this for years now. She says that when she needs a vacation she just goes to her room. LOL

For my son, we went with a color scheme instead of a character. We'll have to change a few items out, but for the most part, I think he can use it for a good while.

Better Homes & Garden has a magazine called Kids Rooms. It's amazing and shows how to do rooms that grow. Look for it at a bookstore. I am newly obsessed with this one. :)
