Hello, I am 38 weeks pregnant and I have had some sort of cold/cough off and on (mostly on) for almost a month now. I have tried Robitussin, did nothing, I tried Sudafed, did nothing. My doctor said I could take Tylenol PM which I might try tonight. I have pregnancy insomnia t least 2 nights a weeks for several hours 2-5am, 3-5am, etc. Does anyone have any other suggestions of things I can take or do? I am so miserable and just want to feel healthy these last few weeks.

Thanks in advance,

N.

I don't know if this is too late to help or not. I had the flu last week and my doctor suggested taking either a teaspoon of honey or karo syrup to help with my cough. I used Karo syrup and found it really did help quite a bit. I wasn't told how often to do, so I just took it whenever I felt I needed it. It also helped a lot with my dry throat from having to breathe through my mouth since my nose was so stuffed up.

Hi N.,

I don't know if you are up for any "natural" remedies...if you are, try making a tea by boiling Oregano. I did this when I was in your similar situation (32 weeks pregnant) and it helped! The good thing is you can drink it all day, no problems!!

Take care of yourself!

Hugs hun! I can totally sympathize. I got the flu when I was pregnant with my daughter, the congestion and the cough were so miserable on top of barely being able to take anything. I know my Dr said I could take Corriciden D I believe and I was able to take one dose of Robitussin to help me rest at night. Being you are so far into your pregnancy they may just not let you take anything. Ask about the soothing vaper plugs though, it fills your bedroom up with that vapor smell and helps you relax, they also have the tablets you can use in the shower that help open you up. I was also able to use vapor rub on my chest which helped some.
Hang in there and hugs!

Hi there! I am 21 weeks pregnant and have had a cold as well. I thought it was turning in to bronchitis, so I contacted my mid-wife who told me about Blockade- it is a homeopathic remedy, basically just elderberry, lozenges you put under your tongue...it worked for me! Within 2 days my cold had considerably lessened. You can get it at Vitamin Cottage. Good luck!

I got really sick with my daughter, I was around 20 weeks though. They tried various things for me as well. Turns out it was acid reflux. Have you tried taking over the counter zantac? It is safe. Take one before you go to be. It was the only acid reducing one that would work for me.

I feel for you. Best of luck to you. Hope you have a safe and easy delivery.

You poor thing! :)
I did take incremental amounts of Tylenol PM while I was pregnant with BOTH of my kids, no problems- I had a terrible time sleeping. Taking 2 tylenol Pm's actually wakes me up more, so I tried taking 1/2 of one tylenol pm, and I slept reasonably well, or was able to go back to sleep quickly anyway.
My regular doctor and my OB said it was ok to take Codeine while pregnant too and that was the only thing that helped me sleep at night with a cough.
Hang in there! I'm feeling for you! You're almost done!

I think tyl pm has some benadryl? in it,ask your dr if you can take just benadryl, it helped me with my second pregnancy.I actually had to be reclined to be able to sleep, she was pushing up on my stomach so much,I'd get heartburn. Have you ever tried Juice plus( 17 or so-dehydrated fruits and veg.) for building up your immune system? It's perfectly safe, and my dr recomended it to me.If you're interested look up solutions17.com.I haven't gotten sick for over a year.

Just start taking 1000mg vitamin c a day and 25mg zinc a day for a few days. Neither will harm the baby. The vitamin C will help get rid of the symptoms and zinc will boost your immune system. The extra folic acid in prenatal vitamins blocks the bodies ability to absorb zinc--so you might need some extra for a few days, and some extra vitamin C won't hurt when you're getting rid of a cold.

Put Vicks Vapo Rub on your feet and then cover with socks. Especially right before bed. It works! No side effects!

Poor you! I had a cold for almost the entirety of my second pregnancy, and it just stank, especially with another little one to take care of. You must have a very helpful 6 y.o. You could do what I did. Go see a homeopath, who can help you with a non-toxic remedy safe for pregnant moms and fetuses.

The drug sheet on Benadry (Diphenhydramine) reads as follows: has not been adequately evaluated in pregnant women. It should be used only if the benefit outweighs the potential but unknown risks. Tylenol has the risk of liver damage according to the official Tylenol web site and is not recommended for use in children under 12, which your baby is.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, but homeopathy is an option many people do not know about. If you live near a big city, you can probably find a professional homeopath in the phone book. Wishing you speedy recovery!

I just read a study on the internet that dark honey of some kind helped children more than cough syrups and had no side effects. I'm curious if it would work in adults, but haven't had a chance to try it out. GL and congratulations on the new baby!
