3.5 Year Old Toddler Exhausted After Exercising

Hi Ladies, once again I need your advice. The day care provider to our 3.5 year old son (a wonderful Lady by the way) mentioned to me the other day that she has noticed, that he gets exhausted and tired very quickly if he is running a little or just plays / exercises a little harder. I had noticed that before myself here and there. Sometimes he really needs to catch his breath. In spring I had enrolled him in soccer and he did not have the most fun with it. He was actually playing soccer in slow motion. Now I am wondering if he might have a condition, I am simply not aware of. Just a little background, we are outside a lot, eat healthy (he loves tofu and broccoli) and although he has a solid built, he is very tall for his age and not overweight. Did any of you had a similar experience with your kids and did it turn out to be a health condition? Did your kids grow it out? I am a little worried that he might have or develop asthma as he had eczema since he is 3 month old and was diagnosed with certain nut allergies about 4 month ago. Asthma runs in my family, and I have suffered eczema and allergies myself. Thanks so much for your advice.

What can I do next?

My daughter's asthma often presents this way, with poor exercise tolerance. She also would cough a lot with exertion and at night. She never did wheeze though, at this age.

Talk to your pediatrician about it. I myself have a minor heart murmur and become extremely tired/out of breath during cardio exercise because of it. I have a high resting pulse rate, so it takes only a wave of my arms to hit a peak heart rate for me and hard cardio takes too much of a toll to be fun. That said, I played softball and tennis through high school (after being diagnosed), ran a mile twice yearly in gym class, never took medications and have never had any actual problems due to my murmur except for the fact that I start panting like an 80 year old smoker when I try to jog/do aerobics. Talk to your doctor, just for piece of mind, but don't worry too much! Good luck!

It could be lung related (Asthma), could be cardio-vascular (undiagnosed heart or vascular condition, possibly mild) it could be metabolic or blood related. Or he might just not enjoy physical exercise...
In any case you should see your pediatrician and get him checked out... just in case.
Good luck!

He could have asthma. What you are describing is how my granddaughter is when hr asthma is not controlled well. I suggest you take him to a pediatric allergist who specializes in asthma too. They have better equipment for measuring lung capacity.

Have you tried placing your ear on his back or chest to listen to his lungs. At first I cannot hear anything but after my granddaughter continues to run I can hear a faint wheeze. Eventually the wheeze becomes noticeable from just a few inches away.

I don't know if his lungs can be compromised without you hearing anything eventually. I know at first my granddaughter can tell that she has more difficulty breathing but no one else can tell. One time there was a new worker at her day care who thought she was faking it. She ended up having to call me and apologized for not believing her.

My granddaughter also has allergies and eczema. The doctor said that the three often go together. My granddaughter has more asthma symptoms in the spring and summer when she is outside a lot.

Asthma could be an issue but cardiovascular issues can cause fatigue with activity as well. I would call your Pedi and ask about the fatigue. You should have them follow-up on this before the next annual exam.

It sounds like you already have a good idea for what may be the problem. I would have his pediatrician test him for allergies and asthma, especially since asthma runs in your family.

I agree with the previous posts. Definately have him evaluated. Our pediatrician told me that asthma, eczema and allergies are all on the same gene. Plus, this time of year, seasonal allergies may also be contributing.

Good luck to you and your little guy.

I agree. Keep a record of what you see, along with any patterns of food, type of exercise, etc. Obviously, you want to rule out heart and lung issues. My daughter has periodic asthma, but when healthy is unstoppable, whereas my son runs out of breath quickly, but he has Aspergers, which, for him, leads to a bit of muscle weakness...he just has to work harder to get there, but he's OK.

The first thing that struck me while reading your post is anemia. My daughter didn't walk or crawl until 17 months, and was getting too heavy. A simple blood test revealed the anemia. Within 2 weeks of giving her iron drops, she crawled and walked on the same day. Her body wasn't processing iron from food. These drops were kept up for awhile until we found her processing kicked in. BTW, this same daughter has the allergy that turns into a rash, then she gets a allergy/cold within 3 days. Please let us know what you find out. If you feel the Dr. hasn't looked enough, there's nothing wrong w/a second opinion, even with an allergist, after the serious things are checked out.

Well it's not only noticed by you but by others as well, so therefore I would have him checked by his dr for asthma, any heart or lung problems or muscle problems just to be sure. If he's healthy he may just be out of shape and need a more regular exercise routine.

Is it time for a check up?? I would just call his Dr. and maybe he can be seen just to be sure nothing is going on. But dont wait if his breathing is being compromised. good luck!

Children that have eczema have a higher probability of having asthma. The food allergy is also related. It can also run in the family as you suspected. My son is allergic to peanuts, and has mild asthma and mild eczema. Totally treatable - he plays competitive sports with no problems. Find an allergist that works with children. They are more familiar with treatments than your regular doctor. Make sure your regular doctor is in the loop too.

Definately talk to your pediatrician, tiring easily can be a symptom of many different things. My daughter was tired all the time and it turned out she was anemic which was caused by celiac disease.

Hello C.,
With a history of Asthma in your family then you should run to the pedi. doc. and have a talk with him.
I am in Castro Valley, spend a lot of time in Fremont and know that with the weather changes the way they have been I am having several problems with limited air in my lungs. I have family in the Sa Ramone ,Livermore, and central Valley that are all having extream breathing problems. I know our little 3 y/o has a runny nose from alergies and asthma the pedi. specialist told us.
As to the other problem are you sure it is the mild form just Eczema and not Porisis which is the more sever form? We have several family members that were all mis diagnosed and paid the price for it in being uncomfortable when a stronger skin cream cleared it up . Good Luck with the rains, then sun, then changes again that will hit your little ones lungs fast, I know it does for us. Think of you tomorrow when I am on Decoto Road.
