18 Month Old Vomiting

Hello. My 18 month old has been vomiting 1-3 times per day for 4 days now. She has not had a fever and otherwise seems fine, other than being clingy. She picks at her food, oddly enough she drinks her milk just fine and is generally all she wants (she drinks a mixture of toddler formula and pediasure for weight gain as she only weighs 16.5 pounds). She won't drink her pedialyte. Sometimes she'll vomit right after she eats and sometimes it's first thing in the morning before she's had anything at all. we are going to see the doctor tomorrow and we've called her...she had us get a urine and feces analysis and everything was pretty much normal. (We live in Honduras, so things are done a bit differently, which is why we went to the lab without seeing the doctor). The doctor also said to continue to offer her foods, so I've tried to keep things light...crackers, rice, bananas...the times that I've offered other things like chicken or eggs she has thrown it up.
So, I guess my question is what could this be. Since stomach bugs are usually gone in a day or so and rotovirus comes with diarrhea or fever, I don't know what this could be other than just an extra long stomach bug. Any thoughts or ideas as to how to help her would be much appreciated.
Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your advice. We did see the pediatrician this morning and because of the unexplained vomiting + keytones in her urine + slow weight gain (her weight to height ratio curve has dropped from 50% to off the chart, she is sending us to a gastroenterologist (and then on to other specialists if nothing is found). She's concerned that ketones were found in her urine..which usually happens when you're not eating and even though she is vomiting she still is keeping some things down...anyway, I'll update next week when I find out. She also mentioned cystic fibrosis as a possibility, though not probable.

Lots of good advice here, especially reflux and maybe GERD could be looked into as well. Perhaps some trouble with her esophagus or upper stomach? Ulcers? Could also be teeth coming in (gums bulging or red?), but keep her comfortable, with very light exercise. For doctor, keep notes of what/when she's vomitting and what she isn't. Maybe flavor or food (allergy?) or consistency?

Keep her on the crackers/rice/bananas/applesauce like with other vomiting, and don't feed until 1 hr after vomit of anything, including fluids. Then, little every 15 min with 15 min between to watch. Continue to give her formula, lots of nutrition there and if she can stomach a multivitamin, that might help as well.

Lots of luck and let us know how it goes:)

Throwing up may be a sign of food allergies.

This happened to one of my children and it went on for a week. It was strep throat. It was the weirdest thing. I personally have never seen someone react that way with strep, but this is what my daughter did. It actually took us going to the doctor twice for the doc to find it because the first time, she didn't look at her throat thoroughly enough. She used a tongue depresser the 2nd time and that was what it was. I hope they find out why with yours.

It definatley sounds like you could use a CDSA (stool analysis) complete with all the parasite info. Keep her on BRAT (Banannas, rice, applesause, toast). I would try to use gluten free toast if you can. I would get her off all the milk - especially the pediasure - for now. If you have access to rice milk, try a tblsp at a time to see if she can tolerate. If so, you can add cod liver oil to the rice milk for fat since weight is a concern. Cod liver oil also high in Vit A, which if she is fighting viral, that will be very helpful.
If you want to do the test, you can order it from www.greatplainslaboratory.com. Let me know if your doctor is not favorable towards it, I can recommend a physican that can interpret it via phone for you. She is amazing and is located in Santa Monica, CA. J

Could be acid reflux or food allergies. My daughter did the same thing around the same age and we discovered she had gotten her molars shortly thereafter.

When I was about that age I was throwing up a lot. My mother said the doctor was on the verge of putting me in the hospital. The doctor told my mother to feed me what I liked. I liked chicken and chocolate milk. Come to find out I was allergic to chicken and chocolate (and about 300 other things) hence the throwing up. You might want to look into allergies.
