I am 20 weeks right now and was worried about the same thing a few weeks ago. It didn't happen till closer to 19-20 weeks for me. Each baby is different! Don't worry!

Hi R.,

You are lucky to feel your baby move at this early in the game. Don't worry and you will most likely feel more movements in the 25th week. Relax and enjoy being pregnant.

:) You probably won't feel the baby regularly till about 25 weeks. It is just so tiny that it is kicking and throwing punches, but the little hands and feet aren't strong enough yet to pack a punch.
With my second, I felt him at 17 weeks. With this one, I felt him at 14 weeks. But then again, nothing was regular till about 25-ish weeks.

Most likely if you are feeling baby it's in little flutters. Pretty soon baby will be big enough to let you know he/she is there w/ stronger kicks.I was paranoid with my fourth and fifth babies (had miscarried before then) and my doctor was kind enough to let me come in and listen to the heart beat any time I felt anxious.

Hey R.-

How wonderful to feel your baby so early! I started feeling my second at about 20 weeks. I had an ultrasound at 22 weeks and watched her doing gymnastics type movement and felt NONE of it. So like everyone else said...It is so random until about 25ish weeks. Congrats and enjoy being pregnant!

Nah you're fine. Baby's just tiny & not rubbing up against you every move he makes. Also baby has to sleep sometimes too!
There are always a lot of things to worry about, but usually nothing you *need* to worry about.

at 17 weeks the baby is so small you won't be able to feel every move, just wait a little bit longer and you will be feeling it all the time

R., What you are describing about feeling the baby move only "sometimes" is very normal between 16-22 weeks of pregnancy. The baby is likely moving a lot, but due to it's size (about 5 inches long), you are unable to feel it unless it is bumping up against the wall of your uterus. I have 2 children and with both pregnancies I remember feeling a little anxious around this time because at best I only felt the baby about once every 24-36 hours. Both were very healthy and normal. Please don't worry, but rather enjoy this stage where you are feeling more energetic and your tummy isn't so big yet that you feel awkward or uncomfortable. Best wishes! Babies are a great blessing! Hello R.,
First of all congrats...Usually you can start feeling a baby around 20 weeks. First time moms usually take a little longer, just because they don't recognize it as fetal movement. However, since this is your second pregnancy, there is a great chance that what you are feeling is your little one. Don't worry too much about the amount of movements at this time. Remember the baby is still very small so what you are feeling is probably when he/she gives a hard kick or moves around forcefully...Good Luck...

My second son NEVER moved perceptibly to me, not so much as a kick the whole pregnancy. I think I felt him kind of roll once or twice...but I really could have been one of those women who didn't know she was expecting if it weren't for the intense morning sickness and the huge belly.

Some babies are just quieter than others...
Ask your OB if you can pop in to listen to the heartbeat without an appointment if you get overly concerned.

Hey R.,
I will be 17 weeks tuesday and have the same issue. I also had a miscarriage in July so my worry is even higher. Being 40 just adds to it. I just went to the doc this week and told her I would feel the movement one day and not the next and she said at this stage its normal..think they call it quickening. Its been over 14 years since my last child was born so it all feels new again. I do lay on my back flat and place my hands just at my pelvic bone on my tummy. Sometimes I can feel the baby wiggling around...sometimes not.Yes it freaks me out. I cant wait for the actual kick..of course then I will be wanting him or her to NOT kick so much. I also belong to a website called daily strength and its a wonderful place to ask quuestions. There is a pregnancy group that has tons of women in there with great advice. If you get on look me up Melanie40.
Gook luck with your new one!!

I have been told that you are able to feel your second baby sooner than your first. I felt my son around 17 weeks - not all of the time, but every so often. They are so tiny at that point it's amazing that we feel them at all! A friend who was pregnant at the same time described feeling her baby as "tiny electric shocks" which clued me in to the fact that I was also feeling my baby move.

I think sporadic movement is (or feeling it sporadically) is normal at this stage, but you can always ask your health care provider.

People usually start to feel the baby around 5 months (18-20 weeks) but it's usually very faint, like little bubbles in your belly. The baby is too small for you to feel more. I wouldn't worry.

just like everyone else said, it should be just fine. at least you are feeling something. doctors and books say it happens around 20 weeks. i think things are fine. just relax, and enjoy. don't stress. stress is not good for you or the baby. i have had miscarriages and have five healthy children. you do your best, and let God do the rest. He's in control. ;)

Congrats on #2! I just had my first baby girl in Feb and around 16 weeks starting feeling something like popcorn popping in my belly. I told my Doc and she said "no, silly, that's the baby!". Most women feel the baby move between 16 and 20 weeks. So relax and enjoy!
