My daughter told me that during the last class of the day in her high school, an announcement came over the loudspeaker. The teachers were told to immediately read their e-mails. Then, the 10-minute warning bell rang, and her class was told to immediately leave the classroom, do not hesitate and leave the building NOW.
Well, I just received this in my personal e-mail from the principal:
"Today at (name) High School at the end of the school day, the office received a telephone call whith a short, non-specific threatening message. We immediately contacted our school resource officer and increased police presence on our campus. As a precaution, we also will increase police presence on our campus tomorrow as well."
Would you still have your child go to school tomorrow? I'm on the fence with this one.

Thank you all for your input. ( love ya guys! ) We've decided to have her go to school. As many have responded, with the extra police presence and staff on notice, it's probably safer than it usually is. I just wish I knew what the "threat" was. In this day and age, I think these "pranks" are of more significance than they were when I was growing up. It's a sad fact of our times. :( I am not one to normally give attention to these sorts of situations, but with it being high school, it made me a bit more worried. I have never kept my kids home before for a threat, and attendance and school assignments are important, but their safety is more important.

A middle schooler here was arrested for posting a pic on Social media with an air gun BUT... He threatened friends. Maybe a day or 2 scared shi.tless for his stupid action will teach him a lesson.
Definitely. I would trust the school to keep her safe. I would also think that the threat is a prank because some kid wanted some attention. I have never heard a school getting a warning before there was an incident. A serious threat is carried out without warning.
Yes, I would send my child. Why? because if there was a threat, there was a huge investigation. They would let you know if there was a further threat.
I also would act confident that everything is going to be fine. You could also offer to volunteer up at the school tomorrow.
In Texas, it would be considered an unexcused absence. This means, teachers don't have to offer make up work and and your child could risk zeros. I'm not saying grades are more important than safety. In fact, your campus will probably be safer tomorrow than any other day due to increase vigilance.
It sounds like the "threat" was handled professionally and with every conceivable step in place to protect the students. Kudos to your campus for being so prepared.

I would keep them home. I don't live my life in fear of my own shadow but it only takes one time for someone to not take it seriously and have something tragic happen. I know all to well that it is now becoming a common enough prank. I also know that it's become an all to real thing for someone to actually follow through.

Well, coming from an area where we had two jack@$$es targeting the entire area and they shot a kid being dropped off for school, I would not keep her home. I would rather the threat they think they know vs the one they don't (like the unanticipated school shootings).

What school hasn't had a bomb threat of some kind, I remember several from when I was a kid. I would send my kids as usual.
If I knew there were a threat, I'd call my kid in sick. If it sounded bad enough for them to evacuate the school this afternoon, I'm not thinking a few extra police on campus would give me great peace of mind.
Yes. And saying that, I'm not a mom that keeps my kids home for every little thing. My 9th grader has missed a total of FIVE days her entire 10 years of school. Since it's a Friday and it will give them an extra day to investigate, yes, I would. Good luck.

My kids' Jr High had 2 bomb threats this year. Both were written on bathroom walls and both specified a near future date, one was a Friday, another was a Monday. The school and police acted swiftly, combing the building with dogs and such. They did not evacuate or close school, but they did keep sweeping the building each day.
The kids responsible were eventually ferreted out. There was never any bomb, it was an attempt to get a day off from school. Some kids did get a day off because their parents kept them home.
I did not keep my kids home.
Believe it or not, school threats like this are really nothing new. It just seems that way with all the media attention now, in the wake of Columbine and Sandy Hook.
I remember back in the '70s (I'm dating myself) we had a few bomb threats at my little, podunk, backwoods school. A kid made some calls so he could get out of school. We also had a kid who found some old, unstable dynamite somewhere and put it in his LOCKER to show off to his buddies. THAT cleared the school fast, believe you me.
Sometimes, these days, you just have to go with your gut. Most schools do seem much more cautious and take threats much more seriously than they did back in my day, so that's one plus.
