Have Any of You Taken BENADRYL While Being Pregnant???

Hi Everyone! My OB/GYN doc said it was ok to take Benadryl in my second trimester because of my miserable sinuses. I trust that my doctor won't put me or my baby in harms way, but I would still like to ask you all if your baby was ever affected by this drug when you took it? I've only taken four doses, and I won't take any more. Still concerned about the what if's.
My OB/GYN doc also prescribed Flonase nasal spray too, but I will NOT take that, after reading the precautions and side effects on that one. So, that will wait until after the baby is born.

Just on the Benadryl part...have you taken it while being pregnant? Is your baby fine? Did it help you?

What can I do next?

G.,
I took Benadryl many times during pregnancy. I can't take decongestants due to a reaction and my only option when sick with a cold or allergies is an antihistimine. My son is just fine as well. I currently take Zyrtec every day and my doctor assured me that if I get pregnant again this drug is also fine. Unfortunately Benadryl may make you sleepy so try to take it at night.

Good luck
M.

I didn't take Benadryl while pregnant, but I wanted to offer another suggestion based on my experience. During my second pregnancy, my OB suggested I try a "neti pot" and it helped a lot! If you've not heard of this before, it's essentially a way to rinse your sinuses with a saline solution which naturally moisturizes them. That added moisture is soothing to the tissues which in turn reduces swelling and stuffiness. I was a little apprehensive at first because it sounded like a strange idea, but it worked really well for me. I bought mine at Walgreens for about $12.

I have bad allergies too. I have heard nasalcrom is safer than other meds...something about its FDA classification..but check it out for yourself if you are interested.

Yes, I took it as needed during both of mine. It makes me really sleepy so I only took it when I had to. It is a Class B medication so it safe for pregnancy, like ibuprofen. Class C and more are what you have to consider. Usually class C is usually safe during some parts of the pregnancy and anything more shouldn't be unless absolutely necessary for the health of the mother. I've heard about the netipot but never used it. You could also use the Ocean Spray (saline nose spray), it helps but not as much as other things.

Hi G.,

My doctor also let me take Benedryl when I was pregnant because nothing else was helping. I didn't take it unless absolutely necessary, but it was the only thing that gave me relief and I had no problems because of it.

Good luck!
E.
