Anyone Had Pneumonia?

I am just getting over a cold that has lasted over a week, no fever- no cough. Now I am left with a constant pain in my chest and under both shoulder blades- 2 days now. I was watching some info on the news last night about the flu- and they said that chest pain or shortness of breath is NOT symptoms of the flu but could be signs of secondary pneumonia. This is about the only symptom I have so not sure if it could be pneumonia or not? Has anyone had it? Were the symptoms mild or major?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks for the help everyone- I finally went to the doctor. I had costochondritis- never heard of it! Its swelling and inflammation in the chest wall, usually caused from injury or a bad cough. Thinking back I now think I know what happened. I was laying on my stomach in the floor in my daughters room. My darling 3 year old came running down the hall and jumped on my back with both knees- it hurt at the time but did not think much of it.. Well, turns out that it did a little damage and made mommy very sore! A steroid shot and strong motrin seem to be helping. I guess its better than pneumonia. I appreciate the feedback that I got.

You should get to the doctor ASAP. I was just diagnosed with pneumonia last Thursday - if yours came on after a cold/flu then it's likely walking pneumonia. Mine came on suddenly - I thought it was bronchitis, but really had no cold or flu-like symptoms prior although I've been dealing with allergies. I was fortunate I had a regular follow-up appt with the doctor. My younger son also has it.

Just as an FYI, the flu is never the cause of death during these outbreaks - it is things like the secondary pneumonia, so this isn't something to ignore and hope it will go away. I was not even coughing and my only symptom was the tightness in the upper chest and fatigue and yellow mucous.

Also, pneumonia can be caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi. I have all 3. So, if you do get on abx, it is very possible for a fungal infection to develop. So, if you get abx, make sure you take probiotics (at least two hours away from abx) and you may need an Rx anti-fungal after the abx. The doctor Rxed those for both myself and my son.

Also, if abx aren't working within the first 3-4 days, you may need a different one - different types of abx are more effective against specific types of bacteria - I just switched mine yesterday.

Again, get to a doctor ASAP - the immediate care clinics like Primacare are a good option if you can't get into your PCP today. They are all very busy with this stuff.

As mentioned by other posters, pneumonia can present in a number of ways. I have had it several times and none of them presented with a high fever. I had a cough that would not go away and the mucus was not yellow my lungs were just tight. Had gone home and flown on plane could have picked up something in the cabin that contributed to it. Another time I thought I had a bad cold that would not go away and a bad cough. We had just moved from the States to Germany and the changes in climate (dampness). The last time I had it, my oxygen level dropped down to 60 percent and the EMT was surprised I had not passed out I was standing in a 45 plus degree angle in the driveway and could not straighten up to get air. So go get it checked out and get the chest X-Ray. Good luck to you. The other S.

Definitely get it checked out. It takes a long time to recover if you have it.

I have had pneumonia more times than I can count ! But I also ran a really high fever every time. I have had bronchitis with the symptoms you are describing. If I were you, I would go to the doctor and get it checked out. Better safe than sorry with this stuff ! Hope you get to feeling better.

It wouldn't hurt to get it checked out. Walking pneumonia doesn't present with a fever, and comes on much more gradually.

There are also several other respiratory conditions that it could be. It would be best to get it checked out.
